Case study & research
Air purification solution for dentists
Dental workers have never been more reassured when protected by MedicAir®. Studies show the benefits of air purification for dental workers, especially against aerosols. Here is what the case study and the research found.
-
Case study · 180 units, 2020
University Dental Hospital and School, Cardiff
The dental hospital purchased 180 units (the DentAir, the MedicAir® 1.0) and placed one beside each dental chair in the building. The case study notes the units have caused no space issues for staff while treating patients, and no unacceptable noise even at maximum airflow.

Air purification and fallow time in dentistry
In a computer simulation of a dental surgery (International Journal of Dentistry and Oral Health), a MedicAir® unit running at 430 m³/h cleared 99% of the airborne particles within 60 seconds of the end of a ten-minute aerosol-generating procedure. The same room took about 42 minutes with an open window (6 air changes per hour) and about 140 minutes with no ventilation.

Earlier research at Cardiff’s School of Dentistry
A pilot study measured airborne bacteria 20 cm from the dental chair during four procedures, with and without an air cleaning system running. During cavity preparation it recorded 23.9 cfu/m³ with the system on and 105.1 without; during extractions, 9.1 and 66.1.

Innovate UK 2020 Grant Winners
The MedicAir® Research and Development team has been rewarded with an Innovate UK fund to deploy their expertise even further within the world of airborne contamination. Winning the 2020 grant enabled groundbreaking research, which led to the development of the MedicAir® 2.0 from the original Bryant Dental air purifier, the DentAir MedicAir 1.0 (the best dental air purifier in the UK).
Between patients
Dental workers are exposed to high-risk patients
Clients and patients all have the potential to transmit as well as acquire infectious diseases. Whether in the operatory or the lobby waiting room, what is released into the air lingers without proper ventilation and air purification. Across the world, dentists, hygienists, and dental staff trust air purification systems like MedicAir® to purify the air and reduce fallow time.
Reducing the fallow time between patients
Protocols for aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs) are in place for the protection of your staff and patients; however, they cause downtime between appointments, which can limit the number of patients seen per day. With excellent air changes per hour on the MedicAir®, reduce the waiting time for purification against aerosols and other airborne contaminants.
The best HEPA air purifier for dental offices
Unlike other air filtration systems, the MedicAir® is effective with multiple stages of medical-grade filtration (a pre-filter, HEPA H13, activated carbon, and UV-C), tested by multiple renowned facilities to ensure performance, and is used by thousands of medical professionals, hospitals, and residential and commercial environments to improve indoor air quality.
What dental offices need
The air purification dental offices need
The need for air purifiers in dental offices was there long before COVID-19. MedicAir® offers a complex and unique multi-stage air purification system utilizing the latest technology.
Effective against airborne contaminants
Air purifiers like the MedicAir® have been proven to be extremely successful in purifying the air by removing dangerous suspended particulates, which improves indoor air quality.
Many of the particles released when someone sneezes, coughs, or talks are so small that they are able to remain in the air for extended periods. Without proper ventilation and filtration, these suspended impurities linger in the dental office, lounge, break room, washroom, and more.
Improved productivity and reduced absence of workers from the workplace
Studies have shown that improved air quality can also improve cognitive function, improve productivity, increase learning capacity, and show a reduced absence of workers in the workplace, such as dentists, dental hygienists, and administrative assistants.
Acceptable indoor air quality starts with MedicAir®.

What is in the air
Air purification in dental offices helps to eliminate airborne contamination
-
Bio-aerosols
Bio-aerosols are unavoidable in oral care. Dentists and hygienists use multiple tools, materials, and disinfectants that, regardless of purpose, release particulates that decrease air quality. Long-term breathing of unhealthy substances can cause health issues, and dental workers are exposed to them daily.
-
Infectious agents
Oral care exposes individuals to bacterial, viral, and fungal particles during the course of treatment. The human mouth can hold billions of bacteria (both good and bad). When dental procedures are performed, these microbes can become airborne through saliva, blood, and particulates from drilling, cleaning, and more.
-
Odors and other chemicals
Dental disinfectants and materials give off odors and chemical vapors of their own. Removing amalgam fillings can also release mercury vapor into the air while the work is being done.
Trusted by world-renowned establishments
The air purification we provide is trusted in hospitals, universities, schools, care homes, and businesses across North America, the UK, and Europe.
Questions
Common questions about dental air purifiers
What is the best air purifier for a dental office?
Dental professionals choose the MedicAir®: medical-grade filtration with a pre-filter, HEPA H13, activated carbon, and UV-C in one portable unit, with up to 605 m³/h of airflow. It has been independently tested by Intertek, Airmid, and CREM Co., and the University Dental Hospital and School in Cardiff placed MedicAir® 1.0 units beside each of its dental chairs.
How many air purifiers does a dental office need?
It depends on the size of each room. Our air changes per hour calculator shows how many MedicAir® units a room needs: choose the medical setting, which aims for 10 air changes per hour. Or book the free air test and consultation at your office.
Does the MedicAir need to be installed?
No. It plugs in, with no professional installation, and its base is 11.8 inches across. At Cardiff’s dental hospital, the MedicAir® 1.0 units were placed beside each dental chair, and the case study notes they have caused no space issues for staff while treating patients.
Is the MedicAir loud?
Its sound level runs from 28 dB on the quietest setting to 60 dB at full speed, and a whisper is about 30 dB. In the Cardiff case study, the dental hospital’s MedicAir® 1.0 units did not cause unacceptable noise even at maximum airflow.
How much does a dental office air purifier cost?
It depends on the office: how many rooms need it, their size, and how many units each one needs. That is what the free air test and consultation is for, and it costs nothing. Businesses can also call us at (519) 686-3595.
